It's a proven fact: Bloggers think they're awesome. What they do,
many feel, is so important to the continuation of the human race
that they will do anything
to ensure they can continue to blog well past armageddon.
Which is why I couldn't help but laugh at this comment
from web guru Dave
Winer saying that, in 1997, there were "at most 4 or 5 blogs".
He also calls 1997 the "first year" of blogging. Really, Dave? Is it
really true that in 1997, there were only 4 or 5 websites that
posted content on a semi-regular basis, linked to other sites, had a
top-down format, and that allowed users to post comments on entries?
Funny, because while the term might have been invented in 1997, and
that format is now known as a "blog", people have been doing it for
motherfucking ages. There were MILLIONS of websites like
that in 1997. Maybe they didn't call it a blog, but there is no
doubt thousands of people were running blogs.
Dave probably believes he can make this claim because he invented
a shitty content manager program called "Frontier", which was
originally a shitty personal publishing applictation and then became
a shitty personal publishing application that could create blogs
when Dave figured out blogging would be hot. The funny thing?
Frontier was released right around -- you guessed it -- 1997.
Dave Winer is a big man on Internet campus. So I don't
particularly want to upset the delicate sensibilities of his legions
of fans. But really Dave -- get over yourself.
